What is Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD)?

Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is the adaptive drilling process that controls annular pressure to maintain a constant bottom-hole pressure. Using specialized equipment like a Rotating Control Device (RCD), choke manifolds, and drill string valves, MPD allows operators to:

  • Precisely balance wellbore pressures

  • Detect anomalies faster

  • Prevent kicks and well control incidents

  • Improve drilling efficiency and safety

MPD is applicable across all rig types – land rigs, jack-ups, semis, and drill ships – and is becoming a necessity in challenging wells where margins are tight and risks of influx or losses are high.

Why MPD training matters

MPD has transformed drilling by making operations safer, more efficient, and cost-effective. It enables operators to handle high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) reservoirs, depleted zones, and other complex formations where conventional drilling falls short.

With the industry’s growing reliance on MPD, certified training is essential to:

Ensure operational readiness

Reduce non-productive time and risks

Build confidence in handling critical scenarios

Comply with IADC global competency standards

Get IADC-certified and lead the future of safe, efficient drilling

Take the next step in your MPD career. Gain IADC certification through simulation-based training that builds confidence, competence, and operational excellence.
